Luigi Scared

Over the last week and a half, I received not one but two e-mails requesting a scared Luigi. One e-mail suggested that Luigi should be running scared from a ghost, so here we go.

Casper meets Luigi

I get the feeling that Casper the Friendly Ghost isn’t what the e-mailers had in mind. :)

Bad Day For Mario

Clockwise from top left: Goomba, Lakitu and Spiny, Bullet Bill, Bowser, Angry Sun, Piranha Plant.

Let me just say, Bowser is surprisingly complicated. I wouldn’t look forward to animating him.

Discovery Channel

Filed under: Sketch — Tags: — Screenhog @ 7:43 pm

I am a fan of the Discovery Channel. It has some of my favorite programs on television, and as it turns out, great opportunities to draw people.

First up, it’s Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs. On the show, he takes a new disgusting job every week to show what dirty jobs there are in the world that makes life livable, and so I’ve drawn him here in the middle of a knee-deep mud puddle, holding a snake for some reason. (I’m pretty sure he’d do that, right?)

Next show is Deadliest Catch. I don’t watch the show particularly frequently, and I don’t even know this guy’s name, but I know he’s one of the captains.

Finally, I couldn’t possibly do a post about the Discovery Channel without mentioning Mythbusters. Great show, full of what makes science fun, and they explode stuff on a regular basis!

Tea-Drinking Octopus

Some friends of mine had the idea to set up an art website that has the logo of a tea-drinking octopus, so…

Got an e-mail from Frank that said “heres a drawing idea… a piggy bank robbing an actual bank”.

That’s funny. That’s Jellyfish In Armour material right there:

Linguini

I’ll give you three guesses what movie I watched last night:

I started with Linguini, and had even put the chef’s hat on him before I decided that Remy should really be in there, too, so I erased the hat and drew the rat on his head. Skinner was an afterthought, and I really don’t like how his face turned out, but I like the rest of the drawing. I may have to try Linguini a few more times, he’s such a thin, gangly character with an oversized nose…

Come to think of it, so is Ilsoap. Hmmmm… is there a pattern here?

Unicorn, Mud, and a Flower

A fan named Hattie writes “You should make A unicorn swimming in mud!”

Well, Hattie, I’m going to be honest with you… I’m not great at horses and I don’t know if I’ve ever drawn a unicorn, not to mention the fact that I have no idea what a horse looks like when it’s swimming in mud. So, I fudged it a bit and tried for “diving into mud” instead.

That was a weirder one for me, so I decided to break out some pencil crayons – something I rarely do – and draw something. There was a bouquet of carnations at home, so here was one of them:

Chess

Filed under: Sketch — Tags: — Screenhog @ 7:59 pm

Doing my own idea for a sketch this time… had the idea of drawing an old man playing chess, so here it is.

About 1/3 of the way through, I thought that he might end up looking too much like Geri from Geri’s Game, but I think he’s different enough. Oh, and for those wondering, the chess piece he’s holding is supposed to be a knight… graphite sticks are great for shading, but not for fine details. :)

Moon Cookies

Continuing with the “Send Me an Idea” challenge, here’s an idea that Jimmy sent me: “I think you should make a person or something in space. You should make the person or whatever you want with a cookie.”

Hmm… space and cookies. Well, this was the first thing that came to mind:

The Tortoise and the Hare

Over the last few days, I’ve already received more e-mails than I can possibly draw, so to all of the fans of this site, thank you! There have been some really wacky ideas, and there’s a few more that I’ve already received that I still plan on doing (including one that would work much better as a piece of music than as a sketch).

A fan named Steven wrote me with the following request: “I think you should draw “The Tortoise and the Hare”. The tortoise would have a rocket attached to its shell.” Sounds good to me:

There are actually a few influences behind this picture. The first, of course, if the Aesop’s Fable “The Tortoise and the Hare”, but there’s more than that. The rocket, while not identical, is somewhat inspired in its shape by Rocketsnail. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have his logo up anymore, but he used to have a 3D snail with a rocket tied to its back as his logo.

However, I also got some inspiration for this from… myself. Back in 2000, I created an animation in 3D Studio Max for animation class that was based on, you guessed it, The Tortoise and The Hare. It was called “The Rematch”, and these were the characters:

Ah… that takes me back.
