Finally… sketch #50 out of 50. It’s taken awhile, but I really wanted to see this through to the end. Artists – myself especially – are notorious for starting big art projects that don’t get finished, and I didn’t want this to be one of them.

When I started the challenge, I asked myself what I should do for the final drawing. I decided that I should go back to my past, back to a time before anyone knew me as Screenhog. On the day that I turned 13, I started working on a comic strip called “Teenagers”. I tried to get one comic strip done per day, and while I didn’t quite fulfill that, by the time I was 16 I had created over 700 comic strips in that series.

Of course, the older I got, the more I devoted myself to other projects. Teenagers just wasn’t as important to me anymore, and the characters I had created were hardly seen by anyone. Until now.

I present to you the cast of Teenagers. Allow me to introduce you to them.

First off, on the top left, is Ilsoap. The original Ilsoap. I draw him differently now, of course, but he was the main character in the comic strip. When I first drew him, everyone asked me if I was trying to make him look like Bart Simpson. Honestly, I wasn’t, but I can see the resemblance.

To his right is Felix and Michelle. Felix is Ilsoap’s slightly younger brother, and Michelle is Felix’s girlfriend. Felix very rarely opened his eyes – a character trait that I believe I borrowed from Jughead Jones – and Michelle was sometimes in a wheelchair, although I never established in the comics why she sometimes needed one.

Dan, with the lightning bolt shirt on, is Ilsoap and Felix’s next door neighbour and best friend. He was good at knowing useless trivia, but still managed to do terrible in school.

Beside Dan is Epicue the penguin. Yes, I’ve been drawing penguins for awhile. Epicue lived with Ilsoap and Felix, but hibernated in their freezer in the summertime. Epicue also had a comic strip of her own, starring Bernie the stick man; you can barely see him on her drawing table.

Now, for the rest of the animals. Starting from the right, there’s Flit the swallow, who always crashed into windows, and an unnamed worm character that got on Flit’s nerves frequently.

On the bottom left is the two dogs, Loopy and Spark. Loopy was Ilsoap and Felix’s dog, and Spark was Dan’s. Spark got her name because if you pet her too much, she’d get a build-up of static electricity and shock you. Loopy got his name from endlessly chasing his tail. Last, and probably least, is the mosquito on the far left. That mosquito is one of a large swarm of vegetarian mosquitoes that lived nearby.

That’s it. That’s the cast of Teenagers, and I hadn’t drawn most of them in over 5 years. It’s weird how you never really forget how to draw a character once you’ve drawn him/her/it enough times. Drawing them was like resetting my brain to how I drew in high school. Ah, the memories. Maybe I’ll upload some of the better comics to this site someday.

Anyway, there you go! Oh, by the way, now that the challenge is done, I’m going to try and put things other than sketches up on this site for awhile. I feel like this site has been one big sketch overdose.

Way back at the beginning of May, I said I’d participate in a challenge to do 50 sketches before August 1st. Well, there were a few days when I had time to work on drawings, but didn’t feel particularly artistic, so I took my sketches in a slightly different direction.

First, I did a wacky little drawing exercise that you can do at home! You take a piece of paper, and make some wacky shapes on it, as though you were drawing strange blobs. Then, you have to turn that blob into some kind of creature. Here were my blob monsters:

Beautiful works of art? Hardly… but it did push my brain in a different direction, and drawing should do that sometimes. Next, I tried my hand at taking the names of regular objects and trying to turn those names into those things:

Some are obvious, some take a bit of squinting to get.

Only 4 more pictures to go! The challenge concludes this week!

This cartoon, I think, worked better in my head.

I was thinking today about how people will sue companies for stupid reasons, and asked myself “Why would someone sue the Guinness Book of World Records?” The answer, I thought, would be that someone who had tried to get themselves in the Guinness Book failed in their attempt in an embarrassing way, and decided to “get even” by suing. What would this stupid Guinness Book stunt be? Why, stuffing watermelons in your mouth, of course!

Thus, the above comic. Of course, jokes are never funny if they have to be explained, and this one needs the explanation. Needless to say, it will not become a Jellyfish in Armour anytime soon.

James writes “You should design a few Pokemon, I always found it interesting seeing what other people think of when it comes to them, because people come up with such unique ideas on them.”

I assume you mean designing new Pokemon, not drawing existing ones, right? Interesting idea. The Pokemon themselves have a unique art style within anime – especially the original group of 150-ish Pokemon – but I can’t say I’ve tried drawing in that style too much. Well, here goes:

I present to you Beaverbite, Geckameleon, and… some kind of small bird Pokemon with fire wings of some sort. I like the first two, but the third one looked a lot better in my head than what came out on paper, so he doesn’t get a name. (That’ll teach him for being drawn badly.)

As an extra treat for today, you know how I mentioned before that I don’t draw Pokemon often? Well, the only time I can ever recall drawing a Pokemon before today was the following drawing, done in early 2000.

Andrey wrote me, asking “If you could create your own wii game like the creator of the boom blox & boom blox bash party did with EA. What would it be? How would it look like? Will it be a 50 mini-game party game type? Or maybe you can draw your own characters and make an adventure or party game like Rayman Raving Rabbids or a puzzle game like Boom Blox.”

If I could make my own Wii game… funny you should ask. This is probably my first time publicly saying this, but I very much would like to make my own single-player Wii game. In fact, I’ve been sketching out ideas for my game idea over the last four years.

Of course, it’s difficult to actually show sketches without giving away the game idea itself, but here’s some concepts for it that don’t give too much away:

This is one idea for the planet where the game would take place. I’d always liked the idea of a doughnut-shaped planet, and it makes for a few neat story possibilities in the game.

This is a concept for the interior of a cave in the game. The crystals would be somewhat significant in the game, but not in the usual “I have found a magical crystal” sense.

Enemies. Many games need them, and this game would need a lot of them.

Will my game idea ever get made? Who knows… but I sure hope so. Will it get made soon? I highly doubt it… keep in mind that I’ve already been sitting on this game idea for four years.

Why not? I’m having a great deal of fun with these Mario ones:

Somehow, I don’t think that Waluigi would feel particularly bad to have been the one SENDING the blue turtle shell…

Side note about Waluigi: the first time I ever saw a video of Charles Martinet, he was doing the voice of Waluigi saying “I’m Waluigi! Everybody’s a cheater but me!”. Charles Martinet, in case you were unaware, is the English voice of many Mario characters, including Mario, Luigi, and Wario. Anyway, when I saw the video, I was surprised seeing what the voice of the character actually looked like, and I’m fairly certain that memory influenced this picture.
