Teenagers

Finally… sketch #50 out of 50. It’s taken awhile, but I really wanted to see this through to the end. Artists – myself especially – are notorious for starting big art projects that don’t get finished, and I didn’t want this to be one of them.

When I started the challenge, I asked myself what I should do for the final drawing. I decided that I should go back to my past, back to a time before anyone knew me as Screenhog. On the day that I turned 13, I started working on a comic strip called “Teenagers”. I tried to get one comic strip done per day, and while I didn’t quite fulfill that, by the time I was 16 I had created over 700 comic strips in that series.

Of course, the older I got, the more I devoted myself to other projects. Teenagers just wasn’t as important to me anymore, and the characters I had created were hardly seen by anyone. Until now.

I present to you the cast of Teenagers. Allow me to introduce you to them.

First off, on the top left, is Ilsoap. The original Ilsoap. I draw him differently now, of course, but he was the main character in the comic strip. When I first drew him, everyone asked me if I was trying to make him look like Bart Simpson. Honestly, I wasn’t, but I can see the resemblance.

To his right is Felix and Michelle. Felix is Ilsoap’s slightly younger brother, and Michelle is Felix’s girlfriend. Felix very rarely opened his eyes – a character trait that I believe I borrowed from Jughead Jones – and Michelle was sometimes in a wheelchair, although I never established in the comics why she sometimes needed one.

Dan, with the lightning bolt shirt on, is Ilsoap and Felix’s next door neighbour and best friend. He was good at knowing useless trivia, but still managed to do terrible in school.

Beside Dan is Epicue the penguin. Yes, I’ve been drawing penguins for awhile. Epicue lived with Ilsoap and Felix, but hibernated in their freezer in the summertime. Epicue also had a comic strip of her own, starring Bernie the stick man; you can barely see him on her drawing table.

Now, for the rest of the animals. Starting from the right, there’s Flit the swallow, who always crashed into windows, and an unnamed worm character that got on Flit’s nerves frequently.

On the bottom left is the two dogs, Loopy and Spark. Loopy was Ilsoap and Felix’s dog, and Spark was Dan’s. Spark got her name because if you pet her too much, she’d get a build-up of static electricity and shock you. Loopy got his name from endlessly chasing his tail. Last, and probably least, is the mosquito on the far left. That mosquito is one of a large swarm of vegetarian mosquitoes that lived nearby.

That’s it. That’s the cast of Teenagers, and I hadn’t drawn most of them in over 5 years. It’s weird how you never really forget how to draw a character once you’ve drawn him/her/it enough times. Drawing them was like resetting my brain to how I drew in high school. Ah, the memories. Maybe I’ll upload some of the better comics to this site someday.

Anyway, there you go! Oh, by the way, now that the challenge is done, I’m going to try and put things other than sketches up on this site for awhile. I feel like this site has been one big sketch overdose. :)
